Not every iPhone release surpasses the sales of its predecessor, and this poses a challenge for the iPhone 16 series. Apple CEO Tim Cook shared with Susan Li that the latest models are indeed seeing higher sales numbers compared to the iPhone 15 series during the same time frame last year. Interestingly, the key factor behind this trend is “Apple Intelligence.”
Cook mentioned that “of course the countries where we have launched Apple Intelligence showed stronger year-over-year sales performance compared to those where we haven’t.” In other words, the iPhone 16’s debut wasn’t as impressive in China, where Apple Intelligence services are not currently available.
Are the early features of Apple Intelligence actually translating into increased iPhone 16 sales?
Initially, the iPhone 16 lineup launched without any Apple Intelligence capabilities, contrary to their robust marketing campaign claiming, “Apple Intelligence is here.”
Once Apple finally introduced the first set of Apple Intelligence features focused on enhancing writing and redesigning Siri, key features like Genmoji, image creation, and ChatGPT integration were still missing.
Recently, Apple has rolled out most of the offerings included in the first year of Apple Intelligence, yet significant Siri features promised for iOS 18 are still absent from Apple Intelligence.
Looking ahead, Cook stated that Apple Intelligence will expand to more countries by April, coinciding with the expected release of iOS 18.4. This update should introduce new Siri features that allow the digital assistant to use context from the user’s iPhone to fulfill requests more effectively.
In a related note, Cook touched upon DeepSeek, the AI company from China that has stirred things up in sectors influenced by firms like NVIDIA and OpenAI.
I think it’s fantastic… efficiency is invaluable, and innovation that enhances efficiency is equally commendable. We’ve always maintained a hybrid investment model in the data center arena, balancing our data centers with third-party resources. We’re committed to continuing that strategy.
Hopefully, Cook will elaborate on these reflections during the next analyst call.
