iPhone 18 Fold: What to Expect, Release Date, and Key Details You Should Know

Speculations regarding foldable iPhones have been around for years, but recent information indicates that Apple is on the verge of announcing this new innovation. The company is said to be developing two foldable products: a clamshell foldable iPhone and a large 20-inch foldable iPad, with the iPhone expected to launch first.

Display Specifications

The forthcoming foldable iPhone is anticipated to feature a clamshell design, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr, allowing it to maintain a typical phone display size while folding inwards for compact storage.

According to recent reports from The Wall Street Journal, the foldable iPhone will boast a screen larger than that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, with a display size expected to be at least 7 inches:

Sources have revealed that Apple is planning to launch two foldable devices: one larger model aimed at serving as a laptop with a display close to the size of a desktop monitor, measuring about 19 inches, and a smaller foldable iPhone with a display larger than that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, designed specifically for mobile use.

Some internal hurdles faced during the development of the foldable include minimizing crease visibility, enhancing the hinge mechanism, and selecting a suitable display material. Apple is focused on resolving these issues before the product launch.

Foldable Market Overview

The introduction of Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to invigorate a slumping foldable market, as stated by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC).

Between 2019 and 2023, the foldable market experienced exponential growth at a rate of 40% per year. However, forecasts suggest this growth will taper off to around 5% in 2024, with a projected sales decline beginning in 2025:

DSCC’s recent analysis on the market for foldable and rollable/slidable display technology reveals that the foldable smartphone sector has hit a standstill. After sustaining robust growth from 2019 to 2023, it is now anticipated to see a mere 5% increase in 2024, followed by a 4% decrease in 2025. The demand appears to have plateaued at approximately 22 million panels.

Nonetheless, experts speculate that Apple’s entry into this market could significantly boost demand, bringing fresh functionality and innovation. Many consumers have mentioned their interest in the Galaxy Z Flip but are unwilling to switch from their iPhones.

Anticipated Release Date

Multiple sources indicate that Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone is set to launch in the second half of 2026, likely coinciding with the iPhone 18 series. This timeline assumes no further development setbacks. As of mid-2024, Apple has assigned a new codename, V68, to the project, indicating that it has progressed beyond the prototyping phase and we can expect to see it released soon.
