Kuo: iPhone 17 Air to Feature a Sleek 5.5mm Thinnest Design

With the new year underway, speculation about the forthcoming iPhone 17 lineup is intensifying. Today, Ming-Chi Kuo has provided an intriguing update regarding the remarkably slim iPhone 17 Air, hinting at its unexpected thinness.

The new iPhone might rival the thinness of M4 iPad Pros

Ming-Chi Kuo shared insights on Medium today, stating that Apple’s anticipated iPhone 17 Air could be even slimmer than expected.

Previous reports suggested the 17 Air would have a thickness of 6.25mm, consistent with earlier estimates. This would secure its position as the thinnest iPhone to date, surpassing the 6.9mm of the iPhone 6.

However, Kuo claims it may actually be thinner, with the minimal thickness measuring around 5.5mm.

This places it in the same category as the M4 iPad Pro models.

  • 11-inch iPad Pro: 5.3mm
  • 13-inch iPad Pro: 5.1mm

At 5.5mm, this is considerably thinner than what has generally been anticipated.

It’s important to note that this measurement pertains only to the ‘thinnest part.’

Typically in iPhones, the camera bump is the singular protrusion. Despite having a more streamlined camera system, the 17 Air will likely feature a camera bump as well.

If 5.5mm is the thinnest point, it suggests that this measurement applies to most of the iPhone’s body aside from the camera. However, Apple might opt for a tapered design reminiscent of the classic MacBook Air.

Kuo also mentions that such an ultra-thin design likely indicates the device will be eSIM only—something that has been suggested before.

If this rumor holds true, it would enhance the appeal of the iPhone 17 Air as a stylish alternative to the more feature-laden iPhone 17 Pro lineup.
