A reliable leaker with a strong history regarding iPhone camera advancements has corroborated reports suggesting that the 12MP front camera found in existing iPhones will be upgraded to 24MP in the iPhone 17 series. Furthermore, they support the claim that all three rear cameras in the iPhone 17 Pro Max will utilize 48MP sensors.
Additionally, this report indicates that this year’s enhancements to the 5x telephoto camera sensor will be applicable not only to the Pro Max but also to the iPhone 17 Pro.
The current iPhone 16 Pro models are equipped with a mixture of 12MP and 48MP camera sensors:
- Main camera: 48MP
- Ultrawide: 48MP (an upgrade from the 12MP in the iPhone 15 Pro)
- Telephoto: 12MP
- Selfie camera: 12MP
It has been over a year since Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo referred to supply-chain sources that discussed an impending upgrade for the front-facing selfie camera in the iPhone 17 models.
The front camera of the iPhone 17 is set to be upgraded to a 24MP/6P lens (compared to the 12MP/5P lens in the iPhone 15 & 16), which is expected to substantially enhance image quality. Genius is the primary supplier for iPhone front camera lenses.
The mention of a 6P lens versus a 5P lens pertains to the number of elements within the lens. Generally, an increased number of elements results in a lens with reduced distortions.
Furthermore, Kuo also mentioned that the telephoto camera in the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be upgraded from 12MP to 48MP.
Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station supports both claims, clarifying that both iPhone 17 Pro models will be equipped with the new telephoto sensor, not just the Pro Max.
The specifications include 48MP for the main and ultra-wide angle cameras, a 48MP 5X periscope telephoto lens, and the front camera upgraded to 24MP.
This means both Pro models will feature 48MP sensors for all three rear cameras.
Digital Chat Station has a solid reputation for accuracy regarding iPhone camera upgrades, having previously leaked correct information about the telephoto lens in the iPhone 16 Pro and the larger sensor sizes for the main camera last year.
