Apple’s top-selling Mac, the MacBook Air, is set to receive an upgrade—possibly as the first product launch from Apple in 2025. Here are four new features expected for the M4 MacBook Air upon its release.
Enhanced Battery Life
The M4 chip from Apple has consistently demonstrated its ability to enhance efficiency, leading to notable improvements in battery performance.
For instance, the M4 MacBook Pro achieved an additional two hours of battery life compared to its M3 counterpart. Moreover, the first M4 device, the iPad Pro, managed to maintain the same battery duration as its predecessor despite a significantly slimmer design with less battery space.
Since the M4 MacBook Air isn’t undergoing a redesign, all the efficiencies from the chip should translate into enhanced battery life.
16GB Base RAM, Up to 32GB
In a surprising move, Apple configured all its first M4 Macs with 16GB of RAM as standard. This was equally unexpected as the decision to upgrade M2 and M3 MacBook Air models to a base of 16GB RAM too—marking an influence of Apple Intelligence.
The M4 MacBook Air will also feature a base of 16GB RAM, along with a new maximum capacity option of 32GB.
This brings it in line with the maximum RAM available in Apple’s M4 MacBook Pro, providing a notable upgrade from the 24GB cap in current models.
Increased External Display Support
A typical distinction between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro has been their respective support for external displays.
Historically, the MacBook Air was limited to just one external display, which drove some users to opt for the MacBook Pro despite not needing other advantages it offered.
Last year’s M3 MacBook Air allowed for two external displays but only when the lid was closed. Finally, the M4 MacBook Air is set to allow users to connect two external displays while still utilizing the built-in display.
To understand the upcoming enhancements in external display support for the M4 MacBook Air, one can refer to the display specifications of the M4 MacBook Pro.
12MP Center Stage Camera
Apple’s laptop cameras have often not been their strong suit. However, the new 12MP Center Stage camera introduced with the M4 MacBook Pro—and also expected for the M4 iMac—will likely make its way to the MacBook Air as well.
With Center Stage, the camera can track your movements during video calls, providing greater flexibility. It also features Desk View, which allows streaming both your face and the desk’s surface simultaneously.
Bonus: Likely Nano-Texture Option
As a bonus, there’s a good chance that the MacBook Air will also feature a nano-texture display option.
Apple introduced nano-texture displays with the Pro Display XDR in 2019, and they are finally gaining traction. Over the past year, the M4 iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and iMac have all offered a nano-texture choice, so the MacBook Air is expected to follow suit.
Summary of M4 MacBook Air Features
Despite not receiving a redesign, the upcoming M4 MacBook Air promises impressive new features that solidify its position as a worthy update to last year’s M3 model. Additionally, the advantages tied to the M4 processor will enhance the MacBook Air’s CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine capabilities.
