With the release of iOS 18.2, Apple has added a new feature that allows iPhone users to designate third-party applications as the default for calls and messaging. WhatsApp has now updated its app to support this functionality, enabling users to set WhatsApp as the default application for calls and texts on their iPhone.
Establish WhatsApp as the default calling and messaging app
As first reported by WABetaInfo, the latest iteration of WhatsApp for iOS includes support for selecting default applications. Once a new app is set as the default, it will be used for pertinent actions automatically. For instance, when a user taps on a phone number, WhatsApp will handle the call instead of the native Phone app.
While this option for selecting default iOS apps was initially developed in response to European Union regulations, Apple has decided to extend this feature to all users.
Beyond adjusting default apps for calls and messages, iPhone users have the flexibility to choose other default applications for email, call filtering, web browsing, translation, password management, payment (in select regions), and keyboards. In the EU, users can also modify their default maps application.
This capability is being rolled out to all WhatsApp users, not just those in the beta program. WhatsApp is available for free on the App Store, so ensure that you update to the latest version to access these new features.
