Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, recently posted a video announcing several updates to the company’s platform policies, including those for Instagram and Threads. Notably, he mentioned a transition from traditional fact-checking to a Community Notes framework, which appears to be in the process of being implemented within the Threads app.
According to developer Alessandro Paluzzi, the Community Note feature is currently in a hidden state in the Threads app for iPhone. This functionality allows users to add a note to any post on Threads, with the interface clarifying that the “note is anonymous” and linking to an Instagram support article for further information.
The article states, “If you encounter a post that seems misleading or unclear, you can provide a note offering background information, tips, or insights that may be beneficial. If rated helpful, your note could be displayed on the associated post.”
Users will also have access to a button to join the waitlist for the Community Notes program. Meta contends that this adjustment will empower “individuals from various perspectives to determine when a post might be misleading and requires additional context.”
Last week, Zuckerberg acknowledged that his inspiration for implementing Community Notes on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads came from X (formerly Twitter), which has a comparable feature. The rollout is planned to start for U.S. users in the upcoming months, with a broader expansion to other countries anticipated next year.
In addition to phasing out fact-checking measures, Zuckerberg also revealed that Meta will be lifting restrictions on various topics, including politics and human rights, while also discontinuing its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. This decision has faced significant backlash from many users.
Details regarding the specific timing for when Meta will launch Community Notes across Threads and other platforms remain unclear.
