A recent software update has left a considerable number of Meta Quest headsets inoperable. Initially, Meta dismissed the issue, stating they would not address the problem for out-of-warranty Quest 2/3/3S models…
It’s no surprise that customers were dissatisfied with Meta’s decision to render their devices useless while implicitly suggesting they should purchase replacements.
Like many others, my headset crashed and refused to turn on during the update attempt on December 5th. After reaching out to Meta support, I was informed my headset was dead, and I would need to buy a new one.
Others criticized the move, pointing out that it didn’t even align with Meta’s own interests.
The unit set me back £200. In Q3 2024, Meta announced a profit exceeding $15 billion—equating to almost $2000 every second!
If a thousand devices were left completely inoperative out of warranty, and assuming each had a net worth of $100 to Meta, they could replace all of them without significantly affecting their profits.
It would have taken them less time and money to replace the devices en masse rather than engage in lengthy discussions over support cases, which only exacerbated the public relations disaster.
This situation is particularly unfortunate as it impacted a model that many had purchased as gifts for the holiday season.
Realizing the folly of their earlier approach, the company has announced it is working on a resolution.
