Microsoft Introduces File Sharing Between iPhones and Windows PCs

On Wednesday, Microsoft unveiled an exciting new feature set to enhance Windows, allowing users to effortlessly share files between their iPhone and PC, much like Apple’s AirDrop, which is exclusive to Apple devices.

File Sharing between iPhone and Windows PCs is Here

According to a blog post from Microsoft, they are now introducing a beta version of Phone Link for users enrolled in the Windows Insider program, which includes this innovative file-sharing capability between iPhones and PCs. For those who may not know, Phone Link is an application from Microsoft that enables users to wirelessly connect their phones, be it iOS or Android, to their Windows PC.

Once the devices are linked, users can view notifications and even take calls directly from their PC. Soon, users will also be able to transfer files between their devices using Phone Link. When users attempt to share a file on Windows, their phone will be visible as an option. Conversely, on iOS, the Link to Windows application will function as a sharing extension.

Microsoft specifies that this feature necessitates an iPhone running iOS 16 or newer and the Link to Windows app version 1.24112.73 or above. On the Windows side, the Phone Link application must be at version 1.24112.89.0 or higher, and users must currently be part of the Windows Insider beta program. Ultimately, this feature will be accessible to all Windows 10 and 11 users.

This development is fantastic news for iPhone users who also utilize Windows PCs, as transferring files between an iPhone and non-Apple devices can often prove challenging.

The Link to Windows app for iOS is available for free on the App Store. Additional information regarding Phone Link can be found on Microsoft’s official website.
