A recent survey indicates that while Apple Intelligence is relevant to iPhone users, a significant portion feels that its current features offer minimal to no value. The potential impact of Genmoji and ChatGPT integration on user perceptions remains uncertain.
The situation is even more dire for Samsung users, with a larger segment expressing skepticism about the usefulness of the AI functionalities provided.
iPhone users are interested in AI
A survey conducted by the tech trade-in platform SellCell has revealed that AI is a crucial consideration for consumers when selecting a new smartphone.
iPhone users demonstrated a notably higher interest in mobile AI compared to their Samsung counterparts, with nearly half (47.6%) of iPhone owners citing AI features as a ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ important factor in their purchasing decision, compared to 23.7% of Samsung users who felt similarly.
However, current offerings fail to impress
Despite their interest in AI features, iPhone users have expressed disappointment regarding the Apple Intelligence offerings that have been introduced thus far.
Overall, smartphone users seem dissatisfied with available AI features, with the survey revealing that 73% of Apple Intelligence users and 87% of Galaxy AI users consider the new functionalities to be ‘not very valuable’ or to ‘add little to no value’ to their smartphone experience.
The survey also assessed the popularity of various Apple Intelligence features prior to the iOS 18.2 launch:
- Writing Tools (72%)
- Notification Summaries (54%)
- Priority Messages (44.5%)
- Photo Cleanup (29.1%)
- Smart Reply in Mail and Messages (20.9%)
Perhaps Genmoji and ChatGPT will alter the perception
This survey was conducted before the rollout of iOS 18.2, which featured Genmoji and ChatGPT integration.
Genmoji combines the concepts of ‘emoji’ and ‘AI-generated,’ allowing users to instantly create new emojis using Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.2.
By accessing the emoji keyboard on an iPhone with iOS 18.2, users will find a new glowing smiley icon in the top-right corner. By tapping this icon and describing the desired emoji, they can create it effortlessly.
Moreover, Apple showcased the ChatGPT integration as a complement to Siri’s capabilities, with specific inquiries addressed by Siri and others by ChatGPT. Users can initiate requests with Siri by saying “Ask ChatGPT,” prompting the assistant to direct the question to ChatGPT.
