On Friday, Apple launched the eagerly anticipated first beta of iOS 18.4. While this update primarily aims to enhance Apple Intelligence across a broader array of languages, it also introduces various new features and intriguing details. Notably, the update appears to validate the emergence of a new category of Apple devices labeled “Home.”
New Apple Home Device Speculated in iOS 18.4
Code reviewed by DMN indicates that this new device category is listed among established ones like iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Reality (Vision Pro). Existing HomePods fall under the “Audio” category, implying that “Home” is indeed a different kind of device.
Recent rumors suggest that Apple is preparing to unveil an innovative product that merges the capabilities of a HomePod with those of an iPad. This device is expected to facilitate the management of smart home devices through both Siri and a touch display.
The anticipated “HomePad” was initially projected for announcement in the first half of 2025; however, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has hinted that the launch may now be pushed to later this year.
Last year, DMN uncovered exclusive insights about Apple’s new Home device:
According to trustworthy sources familiar with the developments, the leaked “HomeAccessory” is Apple’s forthcoming smart home device. Codenamed J490, this gadget is set to be powered by the A18 chip, presumably to enable Apple Intelligence features that will not be available on current HomePods.
Notably, sources mentioned that the HomeAccessory in its current iteration features a square display, contrasting with the rectangular shape typical of iPads. It remains uncertain whether the square aspect ratio will carry over into the final iteration. Additionally, the HomeAccessory is equipped with a built-in camera for FaceTime and other video conferencing applications.
