Plugable Dock Enables M1 MacBook Pro to Connect Up to Five External Monitors

Plugable Dock Enables M1 MacBook Pro to Connect Up to Five External Monitors

Depending on the specific model, an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro officially supports between one and three external displays; however, a software solution allows you to extend that capability.

The newly released Plugable UD-7400PD dock capitalizes on this fact, providing a convenient method for even the M1 MacBook Pro to operate up to five external monitors simultaneously.

External Monitor Support for MacBook Pro

Apple Silicon Macs significantly improved upon Intel counterparts in nearly every regard, but the base model M1 MacBook Pro faced a limitation, supporting only one external monitor. This was in stark contrast to certain Intel models capable of managing up to four displays.

While more robust models increased this number to three, a software workaround permits even the M1 model to connect with as many as six monitors.

M1 Macs can indeed handle up to six external displays with solid performance, at least during initial assessments. The workaround is relatively straightforward and requires downloading the DisplayLink software for macOS along with obtaining a 4K DisplayPort to USB 3.0 adapter (and/or HDMI adapter).

Introducing the Plugable UD-7400PD Dock

No specific hardware is necessary to utilize the DisplayLink approach, but considering the variety of cables and adapters needed, you might find the Plugable UD-7400PD dock appealing, designed to streamline the setup process.

The UD-7400PD, utilizing DisplayLink’s DL-7400 chipset, stands as the first docking station to accommodate up to five displays, which includes four 4K and one 8K screen. With a Power Delivery of 140W, this dock makes sure that even power-intensive laptops stay charged while performing demanding tasks. Its universal compatibility offers an excellent solution for mixed-platform environments and IT departments that require more than what OEM docks can provide.

The dock also includes an intelligent splash screen that appears upon powering up but when not connected to a computer, showcasing real-time status and asset information, along with a QR code for setup and support resources. This innovation aids in simplifying setup and asset management, particularly beneficial for IT managers in flexible work scenarios.

This dock features three USB-C ports that support DisplayLink for up to 8K monitors, an HDMI Alt Mode port also supporting 8K, and an HDMI DisplayLink port that accommodates 4K. The exact capability will depend on your monitors’ resolution, allowing configurations like one 6K monitor paired with four 4K ones.

In addition, it has a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port, a USB-C 10Gbps 30W port, two USB-A 10Gbps ports, and an audio in/out socket.

Moreover, there’s an additional USB-C port for 140W PD to facilitate a single-cable connection that powers your MacBook while also connecting to external displays.

The dock is priced at $264.95. While specific availability details are not yet disclosed, the company has stated it will be “coming soon.”
