Have you ever put screenshots inside the frames of Apple devices? If so, you might be familiar with the ‘Apple Frames’ shortcut created by Federico Viticci. Unfortunately, this shortcut has not been functioning properly in recent months, and we’ve learned that the issue is due to a bug in iOS 18.
Unresolved Shortcuts bug affecting PNGs in iOS 18.2
In a recent discussion on Bluesky, Federico Viticci from MacStories highlighted the challenges faced by Apple Frames since the rollout of iOS 18.
The reason I’ve been unable to update my Apple Frames shortcut for the newer devices is due to a bug in the Shortcuts app on iOS/iPadOS 18 that remains unresolved.
For the past few months, the Overlay Image action has consistently stripped a PNG’s alpha transparency.
I’m at a loss for any potential workaround.
Viticci sent feedback to Apple in an attempt to resolve the issue, but as of the current iOS 18.2 beta, Apple has yet to address it.
He also pointed out that there are multiple Reddit discussions where users of different shortcuts are experiencing the same PNG-related issues.
Sadly, it’s not unusual for new iOS releases to introduce bugs within the Shortcuts app. However, the persistence of this specific bug several months post the introduction of iOS 18 and the absence of any feasible workaround for these shortcuts makes this situation particularly concerning.
