In my opinion, Apple Intelligence notification summaries are among the standout early AI features. However, they do have their shortcomings, which the BBC has been highlighting with various examples lately. Here are the most recent errors associated with Apple Intelligence’s news alerts.
BBC News Highlights Ongoing Errors with Apple Intelligence
The BBC expressed its concerns regarding Apple’s AI notification summary feature last month.
Launched with iOS 18.1, this feature enables Apple Intelligence to condense a notification’s details instead of delivering the content verbatim.
Currently in its beta phase, Apple encourages users to anticipate mistakes and report them to facilitate continuous improvement of the system.
The BBC is responding to this call. One incident in December involved an AI-generated summary incorrectly stating that Luigi Mangione had shot himself, which was completely false.
Today, the BBC’s Imran Rahman-Jones has shared several additional instances of Apple Intelligence errors reported by users.
An AI-generated news summary mistakenly announced that darts player Luke Littler had won the PDC World Championship—before he even competed in the final.
This inaccurate summary stemmed from an AI interpretation of a BBC article covering Littler’s semi-final victory on Thursday night.
Shortly thereafter, another AI notification summary incorrectly informed some users of the BBC Sport app that tennis legend Rafael Nadal had come out as gay.
There are certainly many more inaccuracies that users may encounter, so it wouldn’t be surprising if issues like this persist.

While notification summaries can be error-prone across various apps, they can pose significant problems, especially when it comes to breaking news.
Simplifying what is already a summary feels somewhat redundant, prompting me to wonder if Apple might eventually consider disabling AI-generated summaries for news apps by default.
