Report: Apple News App Poised for Expansion to Additional Countries

The News app could soon see its international presence grow. Since 2019, the application has only been accessible in the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia.

After more than five years, a report from the Financial Times suggests that Apple is planning to introduce new countries for the app. The News app generates revenue through a mix of display advertising and the premium subscription service, News+.

According to the report, Apple has around 100 editors stationed in New York, London, Sydney, and California.

In contrast to some competitors, the News app relies significantly on a team of editorial curators to choose the leading stories and create new featured sections, while other segments are generated through algorithms.

However, the reliance on human curation has previously hindered Apple’s ability to expand internationally, as doing so requires additional staffing and greater local content coverage.

Nevertheless, the Financial Times suggests that Apple is finally preparing to take action toward expansion. Unfortunately, the report does not specify which new countries may be added. Additionally, it appears that efforts will also include making some content currently exclusive to the US available in the UK, such as the News+ word games and Sudoku puzzles.

It is still uncertain how profitable the service is regarding both ad revenue and News+ subscription figures. Publishers commonly report that the News app drives substantial traffic; however, monetization remains a significant challenge.
