Rumor Roundup: Apple TV, AirTag 2 Enhancements, and iPhone 17 Insights

Welcome to Rumor Replay, a fresh weekly feature on DMN where I provide a snapshot of the latest Apple product rumors, along with my insights and commentary. In this edition: discussions on Apple Television, upgrades for AirTag 2, tidbits about the iPhone 17, and a new Pro Display XDR.

Here are the latest Apple rumors for the week.

Apple Television

Speculations surrounding an Apple TV set have resurfaced after Mark Gurman mentioned that Apple is “considering” creating such a device as part of its revitalized home product strategy.

I genuinely believe that Apple should introduce a TV set, and it might simply be named Apple Television to distinguish it from the Apple TV app, Apple TV 4K box, and Apple TV+ service.

Will it come to fruition? I think it hinges on the upcoming ‘HomePad’ I discussed last week. If the HomePad successfully establishes home products as a significant revenue stream for Apple, then a television set seems like a logical next step. Conversely, if it flounders like the HomePod or Apple TV 4K—serving primarily niche markets overshadowed by Apple’s broader offerings—then the Apple Television may remain dormant for some time.

AirTag 2 brings three upgrades

AirTag

Reports indicate that Apple is set to unveil its AirTag 2 by mid-2025, four years after the original release. This new version is expected to incorporate three significant upgrades that according to Mark Gurman will offer “improved range, enhanced onboard wireless chip, and privacy enhancements.”

Recently, I delved into how the privacy aspect will be particularly important. Introducing a successor to AirTag reopens discussions about the stalking issues the company has been facing.

That being said, aside from new privacy features, I’m uncertain regarding how Apple can position AirTag 2 beyond a simple iterative upgrade. Enhancements in range and the wireless chip seem like standard improvements, promising better precision. Overall, however, despite years of development, AirTag is primarily a utilitarian product, and while any adjustments will be welcomed, they are unlikely to be revolutionary.

iPhone 17 tidbits

iPhone 17

Analyst Jeff Pu has provided a range of insights into next year’s iPhone 17 lineup. He notably mentions:

  • a more intricate aluminum design compared to the iPhone 16 series
  • a new manufacturing process for the A19 and A19 Pro chips
  • a narrower Dynamic Island feature exclusive to the 17 Pro Max

He further emphasizes that the ultra-thin 17 Air is expected to measure around 6mm thick.

His report leaves many questions unanswered. For instance, what constitutes a ‘more intricate’ aluminum design? Why would the smaller Dynamic Island be limited to the Pro Max version and not feature in the 17 Pro, especially since both models are anticipated to utilize the same TrueDepth Camera?

With approximately 10 months to go until the launch of the iPhone 17 lineup, there is ample opportunity for clarification in the future.

Pro Display XDR 2

Pro Display XDR

Lastly, display analyst Ross Young has reported that the advanced quantum dot technology featured in the M4 MacBook Pro is expected to be integrated into the upcoming Pro Display XDR as well.

It’s been nearly two years since the last mention of a new Pro Display XDR, so although details are sparse, Young’s comments are significant.

If Apple plans to unveil a successor to the 2019 Pro Display XDR, 2025 would be an ideal year due to the impending release of the new M4 Mac Studio and Mac Pro, creating an excellent pairing for a new Apple display.
