Rumor Roundup: ‘HomePad,’ iPhone 18 Camera Features, Vision Pro 2, and More

Welcome to Rumor Replay, a fresh weekly feature on DMN, where we offer a succinct summary of the latest Apple product rumors, complemented by my insights and thoughts. Today’s highlights include: the new ‘HomePad’ device, anticipated release date for Vision Pro 2, changes to the iPhone 18 camera, and additional speculations.

‘HomePad’ promises to be an intriguing new addition

HomePad concept

The major rumor of the week stems from a comprehensive report by Mark Gurman regarding a new home device anticipated to debut this spring, which I refer to as the ‘HomePad.’

This smart display device is designed to be either mounted or used in conjunction with an external speaker base, featuring expected capabilities such as:

  • Enhanced Apple Intelligence, including an improved Siri
  • StandBy-like widgets, control options for the Home app, and additional functionalities
  • Photo slideshows using the Photos app
  • A built-in security camera and video/audio intercom, including FaceTime
  • Compatibility with Apple apps such as Safari, Music, and Notes

This seems like the ideal home device I’ve been anticipating from Apple.

By integrating the essential features of HomePods with advanced Apple Intelligence and a more capable Siri, this device adds a multitude of enhancements: widgets, a security camera, slideshows, and more.

I’m excited that we won’t have to wait long for what feels like Apple’s first truly appealing mass-market home product.

In related news, Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated that Apple is also developing a smart home camera slated for a 2026 release. This product appears to be more specialized and could be offered at a lower price point while still delivering similar security advantages.

I’m particularly interested in whether this suggests that Apple will expand its smart home product line to include items like thermostats, bulbs, and other devices.

Vision Pro 2 anticipated release date

Apple is actively rolling out the Vision Pro in additional markets, while the forthcoming M5 Vision Pro 2 is already in the pipeline. According to Mark Gurman, the release for the Vision Pro’s successor is slated between fall 2025 and spring 2026.

As we consider this new model, my primary interest concerns the development of Apple Intelligence. There have been varying reports regarding whether the existing Vision Pro can support AI sufficiently or if the new M5 model will be necessary. Even though the Vision Pro 2’s release is still a way off, I hope we might receive clarity during WWDC in June.

Premium iPhone 18 camera features

While it’s a couple of years away, at least one premium iPhone 18 model is rumored to feature a variable aperture camera, according to Ming-Chi Kuo. For a detailed exploration of the implications for photographers, my colleague Ben has provided insights. In essence, this could enhance Apple’s Portrait-like depth of field and significantly improve low-light performance.

AirPods evolving into health monitoring devices

AirPods heart disease detection technology

The introduction of new hearing health features for AirPods Pro 2 is a significant advancement; however, this is reportedly just the beginning. Ming-Chi Kuo mentions that Apple aims to adopt a similar strategy as with the Apple Watch, continuously integrating more health sensors into future AirPods. I’m fully supportive of this, as these health innovations could make AirPods even more essential for users.

Revised expectations for iPhone 17 Air

iPhone 17 Air concept

Recent rumors suggest that Apple won’t be able to implement the originally intended battery technology in the iPhone 17 Air. Consequently, this device may not achieve the level of thinness that was anticipated.

Although the iPhone was never expected to match the slim profile of the M4 iPad Pro, the newly proposed 6mm battery still allows for significant size reductions. Currently, the iPhone 16 measures 7.8mm and the 16 Pro at 8.25mm. If Apple can bring the thickness down to below 7mm, that would be a notable improvement, paving the way for even slimmer models in the years to come.
