This week, T-Mobile revealed that users can now apply to participate in a beta test for Starlink connectivity on their mobile devices, with actual trials set to commence early next year – about two years after the initial announcement.
In 2022, T-Mobile and SpaceX unveiled a collaboration that would allow T-Mobile subscribers to access Starlink satellites, aiming to eliminate service gaps for users. This endeavor required SpaceX to construct new satellites designed for direct cell service, and T-Mobile has confirmed that there are currently over 300 of these satellites in orbit.
T-Mobile’s press announcement stated that these innovative Starlink satellites will provide coverage to more than 500,000 square miles of terrain that are presently underserved by cell towers. SpaceX plans to launch additional direct-to-cell satellites in the future, though no specific schedule for a general rollout has been disclosed.
During the beta testing phase, users will be able to send text messages, with voice and data functionalities expected to be included at a later date.
Any postpaid T-Mobile customer is eligible to enroll, along with businesses and first responders. Fortunately, participants do not need a premium plan to take part in the beta.
If you’re a consumer plan user, you can register for the beta here, while businesses and first responders can sign up through this link.
