These Exciting AirTag 2 Enhancements Will Make You Consider an Upgrade

As reported by Bloomberg, Apple is developing a second-generation version of its widely popular and budget-friendly item tracker, the AirTag, which first launched in 2021. Here’s what we anticipate Apple will unveil with the AirTag 2 later this year.

Enhancements

In a previous report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it was noted that the AirTag 2 has “advanced in manufacturing tests,” with three major upgrades expected:

  • Extended range
  • Enhanced wireless chip
  • Stronger privacy features

Apple is expected to include a new ultrawide band chip in the next version of AirTag, which could provide up to three times the range for precision tracking. This adjustment may allow users to track their AirTags from distances of 30 to 90 meters, compared to the current 10 to 30 meters. The upgraded wireless chip might also enhance location accuracy in less densely populated areas.

There have been instances where AirTags were misused for stalking, and some individuals even modified AirTags to disable their built-in speakers, making it more challenging for Apple to alert targeted users of a nearby AirTag. Enhancements in anti-stalking features could potentially assist targeted individuals in locating unwanted AirTags more effectively.

Launch Date

The AirTag 2 is projected to launch in mid-2025, as reported by Bloomberg:

Apple is developing a new AirTag—code-named B589—for release around the middle of next year.

In the meantime, if you are interested in purchasing the current generation AirTag, they are currently available at a discounted price, with a single AirTag priced at $23, and a 4-pack for $69.99. This makes the 4-pack approximately $18 per AirTag!
