The current fifth-generation Toyota Supra sports coupe may be the last to have a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine.
BestCarWeb speculates that the next-generation Toyota Supra, the brand’s flagship model, will be an all-electric, rear-wheel-drive affair, and will debut as early as 2026 on an improved version of Toyota’s e-TNGA platform.
Nevertheless, the Japanese magazine did not specify whether the vehicle would be powered by batteries, fuel cells, or the combustion of hydrogen. But, before 2025, Toyota will allegedly release a limited-edition hotter GRMN form of the BMW Z4-based Supra with the same turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine but modified to provide 404kW of power (up from 285kW).
Toyota Supra Could Be An EV
In April, Koji Sato, the current head of Gazoo Racing (GR) and Lexus, will take over as CEO of Toyota. He has previously stated his intention to prioritize BEVs while keeping the company’s multi-pronged approach to powertrains.
“To supply appealing BEVs to more customers, we must simplify the structure of the automobile and with a BEV-first philosophy, we must dramatically modify how we do business,” Sato added. We are on the hunt for anything that distinguishes Toyota from the competition. Our next move is imperative. To that end, we want to speed up several targeted, actionable initiatives.
Wheels reported that Toyota Australia’s VP of sales, marketing, and franchise operations Sean Hanley was skeptical about the company’s plans to electrify its performance GR sub-brand anytime soon. By 2030, “we will have Toyota Supra electric version for every model in our range,” Hanley added, “but we have made an exemption for our GR performance vehicles in our public comments.”
