tvOS may be one of the most challenging platforms for Apple to enhance. After all, how much can really be done to elevate the television experience? However, tvOS 18 has proven this notion incorrect by introducing several fantastic new features, including a crucial Enhance Dialogue setting that’s been an obvious upgrade for me.
Enhance Dialogue Available to Everyone with tvOS 18
In last year’s tvOS 17, the Apple TV 4K introduced a setting called Enhance Dialogue. This feature addressed a widespread issue in TV shows and movies where dialogue gets muffled by excessively loud music, sound effects, or mixing problems.
You might not have come across this feature before, as it was only accessible to a limited audience: those who used HomePods as their main speakers for the Apple TV 4K.
Thankfully, tvOS 18 extends the Enhance Dialogue feature to all users.
Regardless of whether you’re utilizing the built-in TV speakers, HomePods, or a third-party sound system or soundbar, your Apple TV can now enable Enhance Dialogue.
To activate the feature, go to Settings and navigate to Video and Audio ⇾ Enhance Dialogue.
In that section, you’ll encounter three options with the following descriptions:
- Off: The original audio mix remains unchanged.
- Enhance: Dialogue is made more prominent with minimal alteration to the original audio mix.
- Enhance More: Dialogue is further amplified but may significantly modify the original audio mix.
Since the release of tvOS 18, I’ve been using ‘Enhance More’, and it’s been an excellent improvement for my listening experience.
Ideal for Viewing in Apartments or When Babies Are Nearby
I reside in an apartment, and my baby sleeps just one room away from the living area where my Apple TV 4K is set up.
These circumstances compel me to be cautious about the TV’s volume. I want to avoid disturbing my neighbors, but more importantly, I wish to keep my son from waking up.
Enhance Dialogue allows me to maintain a lower volume while still clearly hearing the dialogue, even during intense scenes with loud music or action.
Additionally, if you find yourself in a similar situation, tvOS offers another feature I’d recommend. From the same Video and Audio menu in Settings, you can enable Reduce Loud Sounds.
According to Apple:
Enjoy movies and music without disturbing others. Experience softer sound effects and music but retain all the details from the original sound levels.
I keep this feature activated alongside tvOS 18’s Enhance Dialogue, and it works perfectly for my needs. Any adjustments made to the original mix through these two features are definitely advantageous in my view.
If you have little ones sleeping nearby or neighbors you wish to avoid troubling, I strongly suggest enabling some of these tvOS settings.
Do you use Enhance Dialogue or Reduce Loud Sounds? Why or why not? Share your thoughts in the comments.
