UK Set to Introduce Digital Driving ID This Year, No Update on Apple Wallet Compatibility

The gradual introduction of digital driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet across the United States continues to make strides. Meanwhile, the UK government has unveiled its initiative for digital identification.

Trial for UK driving IDs set to launch in late 2025

A recent announcement on gov.uk reveals a new application intended to store various government documents, including driving licenses.

From the official release:

Citizens will have the option to utilize a digital representation of their driver’s license via their smartphones to easily verify their age when purchasing age-restricted goods both online and in physical stores — as well as validate their driving rights.

A mobile driver’s license is expected to be among the initial digital documents available in the forthcoming GOV.UK Wallet which will be launched later this year. This application will ultimately allow individuals to verify their age from their phones while shopping or online, as announced by the Science Secretary, Peter Kyle.

It appears the initiation of driving IDs will commence with a pilot program sometime in late 2025.

Support for the entire range of upcoming digitized government documents is aimed for completion by the end of 2027, by which point “all government services will be required to provide a digital substitute alongside physical or card credentials.”

Unfortunately, although the announcement indicates that the new app will be available on iOS and Android platforms, there is no mention of integration with Apple Wallet.

It would be great if the digital IDs from the UK’s new app could easily be added to Wallet, however, there is currently no assurance that this will be possible.

What are your thoughts on the UK’s announcement? Are you excited? Feel free to share in the comments.
