Uncovering the Purpose of Apple TV+: Insights from a New Report

Since the launch of Apple TV+, many have questioned why Apple, the company behind the iPhone, is venturing into Hollywood productions and major streaming platforms. Even the CEO of Netflix is perplexed. However, a recent chart detailing the ownership of Apple products among Apple TV+ subscribers might provide some insights.

Survey reveals that Apple TV+ subscribers possess more Apple devices

StrongChimp Levin and Josh Lowitz from CIRP noted:

Data from the twelve months ending December 2024 suggests that Apple TV+ subscribers tend to own a greater number of Apple products. Among customers who acquired a new Apple device within three months before our surveys, one-third are Apple TV+ subscribers. These subscribers have a higher ownership of Apple devices. When examining the three main products, iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers, we find that half of Apple TV+ users own all three, compared to about one-third of those who do not subscribe to Apple TV+.

Furthermore, only 13% of Apple TV+ subscribers own just one of these three major products, whereas nearly one-quarter of non-subscribers only own one.

The following chart illustrates the distribution of Apple TV+ subscribers versus non-subscribers and the number of Apple devices owned by each group.

Interpreting the findings

The primary question raised by this chart is, “Why?”

What accounts for the higher likelihood of Apple TV+ subscribers owning more Apple devices?

  • Could it be that those with more devices are financially capable of subscribing to multiple streaming services?
  • Is there a psychological effect where a preference for Apple products leads to a favorable view of its TV offerings?
  • Do users of multiple devices simply have better awareness of available services like TV+?
  • Or does using Apple TV+ encourage customers to purchase additional Apple products in some manner?

Resolving these questions without additional data is uncertain.

Nonetheless, regardless of the conclusions drawn, this report indicates positive trends for Apple.

Regardless of the interplay between Apple’s products and services such as TV+, it’s evident that Apple emerges as the beneficiary.
