Last month, Apple unveiled a new Share Item Location feature designed to assist users in tracking their AirTags and Apple devices, announcing partnerships with over 15 airlines. These airlines will allow passengers to share tracking links for lost baggage.
United Airlines has demonstrated how it plans to incorporate this feature into its mobile app, providing customers with a simple method to add these links …
Apple users have frequently utilized AirTags in their checked luggage. It’s comforting to confirm that your bags have boarded the same flight as you, and if they happen to be misplaced, this feature greatly simplifies the process of locating them.
AirTags have also shed light on unreliable practices by airlines:
Share Item Location streamlines the process
iOS 18.2 introduces the Share Item Location feature. As implied by the name, this allows anyone with a Find My tracked device — whether it’s an iPhone or a bag equipped with an AirTag — to send a link to the airline, enabling them to track the item as well.
Apple has mentioned that more than 15 airlines will begin to accept these tracking links.
In the upcoming months, over 15 airlines catering to millions globally—including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Turkish Airlines, United, Virgin Atlantic, and Vueling—will start utilizing Find My item locations as a part of their customer service for handling delayed or mishandled baggage. More airlines will be added in the future.
Integration of United Airlines into mobile app
To facilitate the sharing of links, United Airlines indicates that customers will have the option to paste them directly within the airline’s mobile application.
United Airlines has announced the integration of Apple’s Share Item Location feature for AirTags into its mobile app, a step expected to significantly enhance the customer service experience for the less than 1% of travelers whose luggage arrives late.
With the rollout of iOS 18.2, Apple’s Share Item Location feature allows United customers worldwide who travel with an AirTag or Find My network accessory to securely and privately share their accessory’s location with the airline’s customer service team, aiding in locating their baggage if categorized as mishandled.
In the event of a missing bag, customers can file a delayed baggage report within the app, including the tracking link. Customer service representatives will be able to access its location to expedite the retrieval process. Once the luggage is returned to the customer, they can deactivate the tracking link.
