Upcoming Update to Enhance iOS Screen Recording Features

Upcoming Update to Enhance iOS Screen Recording Features

The screen recording feature on iOS provides an excellent method for sharing brief screencasts of your iPhone’s display. I often utilize it for creating tutorials or clarifying my points in the simplest way possible. As mentioned in the latest episode of iOS Decoded, the built-in screen recording tool will introduce three new features in an upcoming iOS update that enhance its functionality.

As a user-oriented tool, iOS screen recording serves two main purposes. The first allows you to record what is displayed on your iPhone and save it directly to the Photos app. The second facilitates live streaming your iPhone’s display.

By performing a long press on the Screen Recording button located in Control Center, additional options appear, enabling the use of the iPhone’s microphone and selecting broadcast destinations for compatible third-party applications such as Zoom and Instagram.

In future iOS updates, several noteworthy enhancements will be added to the screen recording feature.

Record audio with stereo microphone

Currently, audio captured during screen recording relies on the iPhone’s onboard microphone, resulting in mono recordings. The upcoming update will introduce an option to utilize multiple onboard microphones for a stereo recording experience.

HDR support for screen recording

At present, screen recordings only allow SDR capturing. If you try to record while viewing HDR content, the display will dim and revert to SDR. However, future updates will enable users to record and preserve HDR content with the Screen Recording feature.

Live camera overlay using picture-in-picture UI

One of the most significant additions to iOS screen recording will be the capability to capture a live camera overlay while simultaneously recording your screen. This function will employ the picture-in-picture interface, similar to what is available during SharePlay sessions.

The image above displays the new camera option situated to the left of the microphone option in the forthcoming Screen Recording UI. This Camera button allows you to capture video from the onboard camera while recording the screen.

DMN’s Perspective

While these enhancements may not be significant for every user, they hold great value for those who frequently rely on screen recording. The introduction of all three features, especially the video overlay, will enhance the utility considerably. What are your thoughts?
