VLC ranks among the most widely-used cross-platform media players, and its developer, VideoLAN, is gearing up to release a significant update. Soon, users will have the capability to utilize AI-generated subtitles in various languages, even without an internet connection.
AI-Generated Subtitles Coming to VLC
VideoLAN revealed this innovative technology at CES 2025, showcasing videos that demonstrate its capabilities. Essentially, VLC will leverage AI to autonomously create subtitles for videos. Moreover, the AI will translate these subtitles into multiple languages, all while functioning offline and in real-time.
“At the same time, we have automatic translation working to convert the subtitles into your preferred language,” Kempf states, with support for over 100 languages in the works. “What’s crucial is that this operates locally on your machine, offline, without reliance on cloud services. It runs directly within the executable.”
In a sequence of videos shared on X, VideoLAN highlighted open-source AI models that are capable of generating real-time subtitles in various languages. The company asserts that this feature will be applicable not only to pre-recorded content but also live broadcasts.
As reported by The Verge, VideoLAN had previously been developing a plugin utilizing OpenAI’s Whisper for subtitle generation, but their latest demonstration appears to showcase an integrated feature within the VLC application. The precise timeline for public release of this feature is yet to be disclosed.
In March 2024, VideoLAN declared its efforts on version 4.0 of VLC, a major revamp that aims to rewrite “the entire core” of the application. This forthcoming update promises a refreshed user interface along with additional features. VideoLAN has also indicated it is working on a version compatible with Apple Vision Pro.
