Over a year ago, WhatsApp started trialing a new capability that converts audio messages into text. Previously limited to beta testers, this feature is now available to all users, allowing everyone to access transcriptions of their voice messages on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp now offers voice message transcription
This new functionality enables the app to recognize speech in voice messages and convert it into readable text, making it easier for users to grasp the message content without having to listen to the audio. This is particularly beneficial in scenarios where playing audio messages isn’t feasible. Meta has stated that all transcriptions are conducted on-device once the audio message is downloaded.
“Sending a voice message helps to foster connections with friends and family in a personalized way. There’s something uniquely special about hearing the voice of a loved one, even from a distance. However, sometimes you may find yourself in a busy environment, on the go, or receiving a lengthy voice note that stops you from listening,” the company highlighted in a blog post.
Currently, it is important to note that only a limited range of languages is supported. Voice message transcripts on WhatsApp are available solely in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. Meta indicates that this feature is being gradually rolled out worldwide and should reach all users “in the coming weeks.”
In contrast, Apple introduced a similar transcription feature in iMessage with iOS 17 last year. However, Apple’s messaging service supports audio transcription in numerous languages.
WhatsApp is available for free on the App Store for both iPhone and Mac users. Ensure you have the latest app version to access these new features.
