Why Vision Pro Makes a Strong Case for Reintroducing Touch ID on the iPhone

Apple first launched Face ID on the iPhone back in 2017, leading to the almost complete phasing out of Touch ID except for the budget iPhone SE. Interestingly, even the SE may soon drop it. Now seems like an ideal time to reintegrate Touch ID across the iPhone lineup, and the reason is Vision Pro.

Vision Pro made me immediately long for Touch ID on iPhone

Vision Pro stands as one of Apple’s most impressive technological feats.

However, after purchasing this ‘spatial computer,’ I soon found myself wishing for a blast from the past: Touch ID.

Why is that?

Simply because Face ID on iPhone is useless while wearing the Vision Pro—something I’m reminded of every time I interact with visionOS.

Embedded Face ID in iPhone 16 Pro

I’ll admit that I’m a new owner of the Vision Pro, so perhaps my struggle stems from retraining my habits to not reach for my iPhone.

Maybe in the future, I’ll become so proficient with visionOS that I won’t need to use the iPhone when utilizing Vision Pro.

But I have my doubts.

The iPhone is here to stay, which means my inclination to use it while donning the Vision Pro isn’t going anywhere soon.

It would be fantastic if Apple could enhance Face ID via software to recognize my face even when I’m wearing the Vision Pro.

They implemented a similar software update back in 2022 for people wearing masks. Though it made Face ID a bit less secure, it greatly increased convenience during pandemic days.

However, I suspect making Face ID compatible with Vision Pro would be a much more complex task. Instead, perhaps Touch ID could be the answer.

Many have pointed out additional benefits to integrating Touch ID into the iPhone. In specific scenarios, it can offer more convenience than Face ID.

Touch ID solution isn’t critical, but its importance will increase

Currently, Vision Pro is only, according to CEO Tim Cook, an “early adopter product.” Thus, minor annoyances like this should not dictate Apple’s immediate objectives.

However, in the coming years, as Vision-related products gain prominence, I sincerely hope that Touch ID can make a grand return to the iPhone.

An under-display Touch ID would be a notable improvement. Nevertheless, Apple doesn’t need to go too far; simply integrating it into the power button as seen on the iPad would suffice.

Given that Apple devices are renowned for their seamless integration, I hope this significant exception can be resolved soon, allowing Vision Pro and iPhone to coexist without hindrance.
