Will the iPhone 17 Lineup Feature Higher Refresh Rate Displays?

Once again, we find ourselves amidst a wave of speculation. Recent reports indicate that all models of the iPhone 17 will feature ProMotion technology, Apple’s branding for displays with improved refresh rates. While this possibility appears likely, it may be prudent not to jump to conclusions just yet – here’s why.

iPhone 17 and the Speculations Surrounding Higher Refresh Rate Displays

Noted display expert Ross Young stated last September that each iPhone 17 model would be equipped with ProMotion, a feature currently reserved for Pro editions. A notable leaker, Digital Chat Station, recently echoed these claims, asserting that the entire lineup of iPhone 17 will incorporate LTPO displays capable of variable refresh rates.

Since the introduction of the iPhone 13 Pro, every Pro model has utilized an LTPO display that dynamically adjusts its refresh rate, achieving a peak of 120Hz for incredibly smooth animations. In contrast, the non-Pro models remain fixed at a refresh rate of 60Hz.

Given the recent buzz, many enthusiasts are starting to speculate that the non-Pro iPhone 17 models might also feature 120Hz displays equipped with ProMotion. Personally, I find this unlikely. By definition, “ProMotion” is a feature that Apple designates as exclusive to its Pro devices. Thus far, only the iPad Pro, iPhone Pro, and MacBook Pro have this capability.

Absolutely, there are occasions when Apple brings features from its Pro offerings to lower-cost alternatives, but that isn’t always the case—particularly when the nomenclature includes “Pro.”

If I had to speculate, I believe Apple might incorporate higher refresh rate displays in the iPhone 17 and 17 Air, but these are unlikely to reach 120Hz. Instead, there’s a strong likelihood that Apple will opt for 90Hz panels, providing a smoother experience than the 60Hz displays without matching the ProMotion technology. It’s even possible that they will introduce a new marketing term like “Liquid Motion.”

Recently, an unnamed source shared with the Upgrade podcast that Apple has been investigating 90Hz display technology for products including the iPad Air, Studio Display, and even the iMac. This leads me to believe it’s quite possible the same tech could be extended to non-Pro iPhones.

What do you think? Will non-Pro iPhones come with 120Hz or 90Hz displays? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
