Yahoo Answers is an era on its own that is storied and long. Although the questions and answers themselves may have been dubious, to say the least, at times.
Be that as it may, it is among the most storied and oldest existing Q&A platforms on the internet. The announcement has been made that it is going to shut down permanently on 4th May.
Yahoo Answers Marked A Generation
From 4th May onwards, the website for Yahoo Answers will get automatically redirected to the homepage of Yahoo. Moreover, all the archives of the platform will also reportedly be wiped out. Yahoo Answers came online back in 2005.
In 2017, Verizon Media Group had bought Yahoo in a deal worth around $5 billion. The change was announced at the head of the homepage of Yahoo Answers. On clicking the message, users will be led to an FAQ, which has all the detailed timing schedules for the shutdown. 20th April onwards, new questions or submissions will no longer be accepted by the platform, as per the explanation in the FAQ.
The last date for accessing and requesting for data is 30th June, after which users will never be able to access them ever again. The data includes all content that has been generated by users such as any images, Answers, Answers list, Questions, and Questions list”. Yahoo states that only the users’ answers, questions, and content will be accessible to them.
Members of Yahoo Answers received a note that went into a bit more detail about the cause behind the discontinuation by Yahoo. It included reasons such as the platform becoming less and less popular as time went by and that the company has decided to redirect resources towards other products that are of better use to the members.
The shutdown may have come at the right time given the heavy politically charged nature that the platform has begun to carry. Nevertheless, it marks the end of a generation, to say the least.
